BoJ Tankan Mixed at Plus 24: How Corporate Sentiment Feeds the Yen
How the September 2026 BoJ Tankan (+24 manufacturers, +35 non-manufacturers) feeds BoJ hike odds and USD/JPY pricing — educational only.
5 min read · 1 October 2026
Key takeaways
1. BoJ September Tankan: large manufacturers +24 (from +22), large non-manufacturers +35 (from +37), released 1 October 2026.
2. Inflation expectations eased slightly at the one- and five-year horizons; markets pared October hike odds and the yen softened per CNA/Reuters.
3. Tankan transmits to FX through BoJ path odds and exchange-rate assumptions, not a one-line sentiment score.
The development
The Bank of Japan's Research and Statistics Department released the September 2026 Tankan outline on 1 October 2026. The business-conditions diffusion index for large manufacturers rose two points from the June survey to +24, while large non-manufacturers fell two points to +35. Reuters/CNA reporting described the manufacturers' reading as the highest since March 2018 and noted it came in just below a Reuters poll median near +25; non-manufacturers undershot a poll near +36. Corporate inflation expectations stood at 2.6% one year ahead (down 0.1 point from June per the survey summary), 2.6% three years ahead (unchanged), and 2.5% five years ahead (down 0.1 point). Enterprises' average assumed fiscal-2026 dollar-yen rate moved to about 154.23 from 152.57 in June. CNA reported that the yen fell against the dollar Thursday as markets pared bets on a back-to-back October hike after September's move to a 31-year-high policy rate of 1.25%.
Market transmission
Tankan feeds FX through policy-path odds, not through a single "good or bad for the yen" reflex.
Headline DI versus composition. A stronger manufacturers' DI alongside softer services/non-manufacturing and cooler near-term inflation expectations is a mixed signal. Commentary after the release framed the print as supportive of further hikes over time but not decisive for an immediate consecutive October move.
Assumed exchange rate. When firms mark a weaker yen into their planning assumptions (154-area versus 152-area), that can ease pressure for urgent FX-driven tightening even as profit forecasts improve — a nuance often missed if only the manufacturers' DI is quoted.
Rate differential channel. USD/JPY remains a rate-gap and risk pair. Softening October BoJ hike odds after Tankan can widen the near-term US–Japan policy gap versus a still-elevated US yield backdrop, even when the longer-run BoJ normalisation story is intact.
What to monitor next
• BoJ comprehensive Tankan data set (listed for 2 October on the release index).
• BoJ Outlook Report later this month and any Ueda/board speaker colour on the pace of further hikes.
• Whether USD/JPY moves track BoJ-path repricing or broader dollar/oil risk factors.
• Friday US NFP as an external shock that can dominate JPY crosses regardless of Tankan.
Reusable lesson
Treat Tankan as a multi-column checklist: manufacturers DI, non-manufacturers DI, inflation expectations path, capex, employment DI, and exchange-rate assumptions. A single "sentiment improved" headline is incomplete for FX until you know which columns moved and how markets reprice the next BoJ meeting odds.
Invalidation and risk
This educational frame is not a call on USD/JPY direction. It weakens if subsequent BoJ communications reassert an October hike, or if US data swing Fed odds enough to swamp Japan-specific pricing. Do not confuse Tankan's policy-input role with intervention or verbal-vigilance stories — those are separate risk overlays. Verify all DIs against the BoJ outline at release.
