Key takeaways

1. MUFG and FOREX.com placed DXY near or at the 102 area — highest since May 2025 / about an 18-month high — into Friday's BLS Employment Situation, which then showed payrolls of +29,000, below the +84k to +98k consensus range (BLS).

2. Thursday ISM at 54.5 with Prices Paid at 77.9 (ISM official) kept the resilient-US activity narrative alive even as October Fed hike odds cooled.

3. Reading a dollar-index test means checking basket confirmation, yield scaffolding, and how much price is event premium before the labour print.

The development

Into Asia and the London approach on Friday 2 October 2026, the US Dollar Index (DXY) remained the centre of the FX tape ahead of the Bureau of Labor Statistics Employment Situation. MUFG Research's Asia FX Talk (Lloyd Chan, 2 Oct) reported that the USD stayed firmly supported, with DXY briefly climbing to its highest level since May 2025 and reaching the 102.00 level as investors continued to favour the US growth and yield story. FOREX.com's NFP preview likewise described DXY rising within a bullish channel to test an 18-month high near 102.00. FXStreet's Thursday wrap said the index had left behind the 102.00 hurdle to hit 18-month tops. Approximate major-pair colour around the same window showed EUR/USD near or below 1.1250, GBP/USD near about 1.3208, and USD/JPY near about 157.9 (treat as research-time approximations). Thursday's ISM Manufacturing PMI registered 54.5 (from 54.6) while Prices Paid jumped to 77.9 (from 71.1), per the official ISM release, reinforcing resilient activity even as softer PCE earlier in the week trimmed near-term Fed hike odds. Update after the release: the BLS Employment Situation published at 08:30 ET showed payrolls +29,000 (below the +84k to +98k consensus range), unemployment 4.2%, and average hourly earnings +0.1% m/m, with July and August revised down by a combined 60,000 (BLS, 2 Oct 2026). Dollar-index and pair levels cited above are pre-release research-time readings, not a description of the post-release tape.

Market transmission

Reading a DXY test of a multi-month high into NFP means separating three layers.

Basket confirmation. DXY is a trade-weighted snapshot versus a euro-heavy basket. A break or hold near 102 matters more when confirmed across USD crosses rather than when one leg alone drives the index.

Yield and growth scaffolding. MUFG highlighted elevated Treasury yields and still-expansionary manufacturing data as supports for broad USD demand. That scaffolding can keep the dollar bid even when October Fed hike probabilities have cooled after Williams' remarks and softer PCE (Morningstar cited market-implied October hike odds near about 34% on Thursday, down from about 71% on Monday).

Event premium. Into a tier-1 labour print, part of any DXY firmness is positioning and volatility premium, not a permanent regime change. Before the release, FOREX.com framed a strong jobs surprise as more likely to extend the test above 102, and a weak surprise as more likely to challenge the recent channel — without prescribing entries. The September print landed on the weak side of that map, which makes the post-release basket check the relevant exercise.

What to monitor next

• Whether DXY's pre-release hold near or above 102 is confirmed or unwound across major USD crosses after the jobs report and into the Friday close.

• How the dollar basket digests the BLS Employment Situation released at 08:30 ET — payrolls +29,000, unemployment 4.2%, average hourly earnings +0.1% m/m, and a combined 60,000 downward revision to July–August.

• Euro-area flash HICP (released in the European morning) as a secondary EUR-leg input alongside the US data.

• Post-print US yields and CME FedWatch October / December probabilities.

Reusable lesson

When a dollar index tests a multi-month extreme ahead of a scheduled labour release, ask: (1) Is the move basket-wide or one-cross driven? (2) Do yields and growth data still support the narrative? (3) How much of the price is event premium that can reverse on the print? That checklist turns a "DXY at 102" headline into a structured session read.

Invalidation and risk

This framing weakens if the below-consensus payrolls, the rise in unemployment to 4.2%, and the +0.1% wage print reprice Fed-path odds enough to unwind the yield support linked to the dollar bid, or if euro-area inflation dominated the EUR leg of DXY. Pre-London liquidity can exaggerate early prints. Live quotes after 08:30 ET can already differ materially from the pre-release levels cited here.

Glossary

DXY: ICE US Dollar Index measuring the dollar against a basket of major currencies, heavily weighted to the euro.

Event premium: Extra pricing embedded ahead of a known high-impact release that can reverse once the data is known.

Basket confirmation: Checking that a dollar move appears across several USD crosses, not only in one pair.
