DXY clears 101 as flash PMI 58.4 reprices October Fed odds
From 22 September the dollar index punched through 101 — a two-month high — after S&P flash composite PMI printed 58.4, its strongest since July 2021. October hike odds jumped from the low-50s toward 70%. Desk colour, not a trade.

What printed
Tuesday 22 September the dollar index tagged a two-month high near 100.70 in choppy trade as oil swung with Iran diplomacy headlines. Wednesday 23 September the tape stopped chopping. S&P Global’s flash US composite PMI rose to 58.4 from 56.0 in August, with manufacturing 57.0 and services 58.7. New orders surged; supply chains strained; input prices firmed. Fed Governor Michael Barr said last week’s 25 bp lift to 3.75–4.00% was a recalibration and that further hikes are likely if inflation does not cool.
How the tape answered
DXY printed 101.23, the firmest close since 29 July. Two-year yields jumped toward 4.85% and the 10-year pushed through 5.10%. CME FedWatch and LSEG pricing both lifted October 25 bp odds from roughly 53% before the PMI to the mid-60s and, on some prints, near 75%. EUR/USD slipped through 1.1400 toward 1.138. GBP/USD faded toward 1.33. This is a rates tape, not a one-print dollar spike.
What the desk watches next
Whether 101 holds after the first pause. Claims, durables and sentiment sit on the US card. If the two-year keeps the post-2008 range high, DXY can grind. If oil eases and the PMI is treated as a one-month heat spike, October odds fade and 100.50 comes back into play. Do not stack a USD long on every hawkish quote — those quotes are already in the index.
Risk note
A two-month high is a level, not a licence. Stops still gap around data and geopolitics. This note is education for a desk you already run — not a recommendation to buy the dollar.
