Desk note

Seven months of Gulf war is the inflation that G7 desks are hiking into

Fed, ECB and BoJ all tightened this month with the Middle East conflict in the statement. Oil, CAD, and gold are trading the same shock from different chairs. A rates week is still an energy week.

One shock, three hiking committees

The almost seven-month war in the Middle East is the common clause in this month’s G7 statements. The Fed hiked and warned of more. The ECB hiked deposit to 2.50% and kept 2026 inflation at 3.0%. The BoJ hiked to a 31-year high. The BoE held, but only because it has not yet seen the energy spike in wages. FX is pricing the relative hawk, not the war headline itself.

Oil, CAD, and the tariff overlay

Energy prices remain higher and more volatile than pre-conflict. That supports the dollar when US inflation risk is the story, and it leans on CAD when Canada is also in a tariff dispute with the United States. USD/CAD spent the week following the yield gap, not the crude tape alone. AUD held up better than NZD versus the dollar — still a risk-sensitive commodity bloc, still offered when USD is bid.

Gold is not a free hedge

Gold and the dollar can rally together when the scare is about something other than US credit. Higher US real yields work the other way. After the Fed’s hike, gold traders are watching the same two-year yield that FX is watching. Do not stack a gold long on a USD long and call it two ideas.

What the desk watches next

Ceasefire talk around the UN week, refined-product prices, and whether October Fed odds hold if oil falls. A genuine de-escalation would fade the inflation impulse that this hiking round is built on. Until then, treat energy as a regime, not a day-trade.

Geopolitics gaps. Spreads widen into prints. No order without a risk layer — size, session, or news. This note is not a recommendation to trade oil, CAD, or gold.
