Key takeaways

1. The Fed held the target range at 3.75%–4.00% at 18:00 UTC by a 10–2 vote, as about 91% of pricing expected; Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack dissented in favour of a 25-basis-point hike (Federal Reserve; CME FedWatch via Reuters).

2. Spot gold was down 0.5% at $4,038.44 an ounce after the decision and the dollar index slipped to 102.26 from 102.37, while the two-year Treasury yield rose 3.73 basis points to 4.774% (Reuters).

3. After rising together on Tuesday on energy and war risk, gold traded with rate expectations on Wednesday: the gold–dollar link is a regime that changes with the dominant driver.

The development

The Federal Reserve held the federal funds target range at 3.75%–4.00% at 18:00 UTC by a 10–2 vote. Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack dissented, preferring a 25-basis-point increase (Federal Reserve). The hold matched expectations: CME FedWatch data cited by Reuters had priced about a 91% chance of no change, and JPMorgan had expected at least two hawkish dissents (Reuters).

The statement upgraded growth to "expanding at a strong pace", from "solid" in September, and kept "Inflation remains elevated". It dropped the sentence explaining September's increase and added that "the accumulation of more information" will help the Committee set the policy stance needed for a timely return of inflation to 2% (Federal Reserve).

After the decision, spot gold was down 0.5% at $4,038.44 an ounce, after rising more than 1% on Tuesday (Reuters). The dollar index slipped to 102.26 from 102.37 just before the announcement, while the two-year Treasury yield rose 3.73 basis points to 4.774% (Reuters). Traders priced about a 78% chance of a December hike before the decision, down from about 84% earlier in the day (CME FedWatch via Reuters). Oil rose more than 1% after an attack on a Saudi refinery (Reuters).

Market transmission

Gold pays no interest, so higher expected rates raise the opportunity cost of holding it. On Tuesday a common shock, energy disruption and war risk, lifted both havens together while the 10-year yield was flat. On Wednesday the rate channel returned. Higher oil raised inflation fears, short-dated yields rose and gold fell. The dollar got no matching support: the index slipped slightly even as two-year yields rose. Two votes for a hike signal that the bar for December is not high, which keeps the rate channel in play for gold.

What to monitor next

• Chair Kevin Warsh's press conference from 18:30 UTC, and whether he pushes back on December pricing (Federal Reserve calendar).

• December hike pricing on CME FedWatch, about 78% before the decision (Reuters).

• US PCE inflation data on Thursday (Reuters).

• The two-year yield near 4.77% and the 10-year yield relative to 5%.

• Further attacks on Gulf energy infrastructure and any progress in talks on ending the war with Iran.

Reusable lesson

Treat a correlation as a regime, not a law. Two sessions showed both regimes: on Tuesday geopolitics lifted gold and the dollar together; on Wednesday rate expectations pushed gold lower while the dollar barely moved. On a central bank day, log three layers at the release time: the decision against pricing, the vote and the statement changes. Then check which channel moved gold, yields or haven demand. A 20-day rolling correlation between XAUUSD and the dollar index, read alongside that log, shows which regime is in force.

Invalidation and risk

These levels are a first reading taken about 40 minutes after the statement. The press conference can reprice December, and Thursday's PCE data can move rate expectations again. Diplomatic progress on Iran could remove the haven premium from both assets at once. Thin late New York liquidity can exaggerate moves after the press conference.

Glossary

Dollar index (DXY): A measure of the US dollar against six major currencies, dominated by the euro.

Opportunity cost: The return given up by holding one asset instead of another, such as interest forgone by holding gold.

Rolling correlation: A correlation coefficient recalculated over a moving window, which shows how a relationship changes over time.
