Gold slumps through 4,242 toward 4,150 as real yields take the tape

Friday gold still closed near 4,285 after defending the 0.618 at 4,242. Monday 28 September the metal broke that cluster, traded through 4,200, and printed as low as the mid-4,150s — a fresh low since early August. Yields and the dollar did the work. Geopolitics did not save the bid.

The level that gave way

Last week’s note marked 4,242 as the 0.618 that survived the first hawkish surprise after the hike. Friday 25 September spot still closed around 4,285 after a modest bounce. Monday’s Asia session took out 4,234–4,230 — the 61.8% retracement of the 3,942–4,697 rally — then 4,200. Prints ran through 4,180 toward 4,156. Silver led, down more than 3% toward $61–62. This is a rates break, not a one-print shakeout.

Why the metal sold

A 10-year near 5.2%, a two-year still at the top of the post-2008 range, DXY back above 101, and oil firm enough to keep October Fed odds near 70% is a headwind for non-yielding bullion. Hormuz risk that should have been a safe-haven bid instead fed the inflation-hike story. ETF inflows are still a support in the monthly numbers. They did not defend a Fibonacci on a Monday open.

What the desk watches next

A daily close back above 4,230 would treat Monday as a spike. A hold under 4,200 opens 4,113 then the early-August zone near 4,055. Real yields first, PCE second, Hormuz third. Do not stack a gold long on a USD long and call it two ideas. Do not treat 4,150 as a magnet just because it printed.
