Gold defends 4,242 while the 2-year yield leans on 5%

From 22 September gold gave back last week’s post-FOMC pop as front-end yields surged. The metal tagged about 4,303 in Asia on the 24th, slid toward 4,246 in London, and steadied near 4,272. The 0.618 at 4,242 is the level desks keep naming.

Why the metal sold

A hawkish Fed, a 58.4 PMI, and a two-year yield pushing toward 5% are a headwind for non-yielding bullion. The same tape that bid DXY offered gold. Silver tracked the lower end of its recent range. This is not a dollar-or-gold binary — both can fall together if real yields keep rising and geopolitics cools.

The level that is still holding

Desks marked 4,242 as the 0.618 retracement that survived the first hawkish surprise after the hike. A hold there keeps the two-month range intact. A daily close through it with the 2-year still bid opens a deeper fade of last week’s spike. Do not treat an Asia spike to 4,303 as a new trend.

What the desk watches next

Real yields first, oil second, Hormuz headlines third. A genuine de-escalation that knocks crude would cut the inflation impulse the Fed is hiking into — that can lift gold even if the dollar stays firm. A 2-year through 5% with no geopolitical bid is the opposite. Do not stack a gold long on a USD long and call it two ideas.
