Yen intervention watch after a 31-year high that still sold off

The BoJ hiked to 1.25% — the highest in 31 years — and the yen still dropped 2% on the week. A suspected rate check near 158 and a three-day Japan holiday keep intervention risk on the blotter.

The hike the market called dovish

On Friday 18 September the Bank of Japan raised the overnight rate 25 bp to 1.25%, the highest setting in 31 years. The move was 7–2. Two dissenters wanted to hold. Governor Ueda repeated that the Bank will keep raising rates if the economy and prices justify it — without a path that matched the Fed’s hawkish bar. USD/JPY ran through 158. JPY was the week’s weakest G10, down more than 2% versus the dollar.

Rate check, then a holiday

In the New York session, after the pair tagged 158, it dropped more than 75 pips in minutes. Desks called it a suspected Ministry of Finance rate check — the usual verbal warning before official buying of yen. Japan then closed for a three-day holiday. Liquidity thins. Spreads widen. Thin hours are where stops get run, as the basics pack already says.

Carry is back in the room

A hawkish Fed and a BoJ that hiked without matching guidance is the textbook setup for JPY-funded carry: borrow yen, buy higher yielders, until volatility arrives. Crosses (EUR/JPY, AUD/JPY, NZD/JPY) followed USD/JPY higher. Positioning has already seen a large three-week reversal. Unwind speed is why quiet, high-carry pairs can gap.

What the desk watches next

Verbal warnings, then actual intervention, live around 160 if the dollar keeps the yield advantage. Do not treat 158 as a single tick. Treat it as a zone. A holiday open can gap through a stop that looked tidy on Friday’s close.

Risk note

Intervention is a regime shift, not a candle. Size from the stop, not from the headline. This is market colour — not a call to fade USD/JPY or to chase the carry.
